ArchivalResource

John Stark Ravenscroft papers, 1820-1970.

There are only three items by Ravenscroft in these papers: a printed sermon at the opening of the Virginia Convention, 1820, and two letters of 1827, one to Bishop James Kemp regarding the ordination of George M. West in Ohio, affairs in North Carolina, and the shortage of clergy; the other to the Reverend Frederick W. Hatch about conditions in the Diocese of Virginia. Other material about the Bishop is chiefly contained in correspondence between the Reverend Robert B. Croes and the Reverend William Rollinson Whittingham, 1824-1828, discussing Ravencroft's writings and conduct of Church affairs in North Carolina; his attitude to the General Theological Seminary and the Virginia Theological Seminary; his popularity and High Church views; his controversy with John Holt Rice, 1826-1827; and his killing himself with overwork. The collection also contains some posthumous references to Ravenscroft.
